Technology
Software, services and equipment support execution, monitoring and quality assurance.
The tool serves the process
Choose a tool's role based on process needs: what it helps people do, what information it records, and what it connects to. Automation can speed up repetitive work, but responsibility is still needed for handling exceptions in automated work.
Readiness is more than installation
Ensure licences, access rights, integrations, maintenance ownership and user skills are in place. Plan how work continues when a tool is unavailable. Changing a tool may also require changes to process instructions.
Technology is the tool used in the work. Infrastructure is the technical foundation on which that tool operates.
Practical example
Tools for incident investigation
An ITSM system records the incident and its handling history. Monitoring detects deviations. Log management supports root cause analysis, and communication tools help coordinate corrective work.
Include in your process description
- What task does each tool serve?
- Are licences, access rights and integrations in place?
- Who is responsible for operation and support?
- What is the fallback procedure if a tool fails?
