Feedback loops
Feedback loops
Feedback connects the correction of an individual process run with improvement of the entire process.
Operational feedback corrects the work
When output quality fails to meet the criteria, work returns to the process. The aim is to bring the current run to an acceptable state. The source examples use a time frame of days to weeks, but in practice this depends on the work.
Strategic feedback changes how work is done
Findings from outcome evaluation inform governance decisions. The owner assesses whether objectives, rules or the process need to change. The time frame is often longer, but significant findings can be addressed before the next scheduled review.
Practical example
From correction to learning
A defect found in testing is corrected in the operational loop. If similar defects recur, the findings inform a strategic review: is a new check, clearer guidance or a different allocation of responsibilities needed?
Include in your process description
- What finding triggers corrective action?
- When is an issue raised with the process owner?
- Who decides on a lasting change?
- How is the effect of an improvement checked?
