Output

A tangible result that can be checked and handed over to a customer or the next process.

Criteria for completed work

A high-quality output contains the agreed components, is documented and has been quality-checked. The recipient should be able to use it without unnecessary clarification. Define acceptance criteria before work begins.

Handover is part of the process

Simply saving a file is not always a sufficient handover. Agree the recipient, delivery method, approver and storage location. Traceability helps show which version was approved and the basis for the decision.

The output describes what was completed. The outcome describes what the completed work achieved.

Practical example

The result of a security review

The handover includes the assessment report, vulnerabilities with risk levels, the approval decision and rationale, and residual risks with their treatment plan. The next stage can then see both the decision and its conditions.

Include in your process description

  • What does the completed output include?
  • Who verifies quality and approves handover?
  • Who receives the output, and how will they use it?
  • Where are the decision, version and rationale stored?
